HEALTH AND MEDICINE Acupuncture

Traditional Oriental Medicine is a truly holistic approach to serving an individual's need for wellness. For over 3,000 years, treatment has been based upon the fundamental belief that there is a vital life force known as Qi (pronounced chee) Energy. Qi flows continuously through a subtle system of pathways, called meridians, that integrate and connect the internal organs and systems of the body. An obstuction in the movement of these meridians is like a dam that backs up the flow in one part of the body and obstucts it in others. When this energy flows in a balanced and harmonic fashion we experience good health. When disharmony and imbalance occur, our bodies and minds express illness.

Acupuncture is used to remove blockages of the Qi and to help build the immune system by stimulating specific points on the body with the use of hair-thin sterile disposable needles. This stimulates the body's own restorative and recuperative powers so that the natural state of balance and harmony that is commonly called good health can be restored. The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulating the body to release chemicals which either change theexperience of pain or trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system. Most patients feel no discomfort and find the treatment relaxing both emotionally physically.

Herbal Medicine is an important and powerfully therapuetic part of the treatment. A specific recommendation may be in the form of tea, pills, powder or tincture. The use of herbs is backed by thousands of years of experience and modern day scientific research.

Oriental Medicine addresses the underlying problem, or root of imbalance, which is causing the discomfort. By working with the stresses of our busy lives, it can also be an excellent way to practice preventive medicine. The following are just a few of the many conditions it is known to help:

Common cold and flu, fatigue, allergies, stress, asthma, herpes, headaches, PMS and painful menses, back pain, prenatal and postpartum care, joint or muscle pain, PID, digestive problems, and menopause.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a component of the health care system of China that can be traced back at least 2,500 years. The general theory of acupuncture is based on the premise that there are patterns of energy flow (Qi) through the body that are essential for health. Disruptions of this flow are believed to be responsible for disease. Acupuncture may, it has been theorized, correct imbalances of flow at identifiable points close to the skin.
