Freehand Tutorials- Making Custom Arrowheads In
Macromedia® FreeHand®
- Macromedia FreeHand ships with a selection of
arrowheads but you may encounter a situation where
the selection of predefined arrowheads is
inadequate. In this case you could make a path
object in the shape of an arrowhead and position it
on the end of the line. This is not optimum, because
if you change the line you will have to reposition,
scale and/or rotate the arrowhead to remain properly
oriented to the line.
Freehand Tutorials - The Anatomy of Vector
Illustration
- Illustrations created in all major vector drawing
programs have a definite anatomy and share a common
pattern. Whether you use Deneba Canvas™, Adobe®
Illustrator®, CorelDRAW or Macromedia® FreeHand® you
will find that this pattern exists even though each
program may define the parts differently. The
purpose of this section of the web site is to take
apart a vector drawing so you can see how it is put
together and able to understand it. In the
illustration section is a table of equivalent
terminology to better help you translate the terms
from one application to another. This will clarify
the subject and make it less confusing. You will not
be bound to a single application once this becomes
clear to you.

Freehand Tutorials - Illustration Basics
- This tutorial, the first in a two-part series,
guides you through the basic tasks of designing
illustrations with Macromedia FreeHand MX. You'll
get hands-on experience using FreeHand and learn
basic graphic design concepts along the way.
Freehand Tutorials - Perspective Drawing Technique
For Macromedia® FreeHand®
- Although the latest version of Macromedia FreeHand
has a built-in perspective drawing grid, this
technique uses guide lines to rough out the object
you are drawing. As shown below in the following
steps, I was able to draw a DSL modem using this
technique.
Freehand Tutorials - Deconstructing FreeHand
graphics: Part 1
- In this tutorial, you will examine an existing
FreeHand image, then create your own version. To
teach the techniques used to draw the original, this
tutorial "deconstructs" the image one element at a
time, letting you take a close look at how each
piece was drawn.
Freehand Tutorials - Using Contour Gradients To Add
Depth And Complexity to an Object
- You can use a FreeHand 10 contour gradient fill to
blend color in two dimensions to add depth to a
vector object. You can also use two or more colors
in the contour gradient to add complexity. Contour
gradient fills apply gradations based on the shape
of the selected object.
Freehand Tutorials - Deconstructing FreeHand
graphics: Part 2
- In this tutorial, you will examine an existing
image, and then create your own version using
FreeHand 10. To teach the techniques used to draw
the original, this tutorial "deconstructs" the image
one element at a time, letting you take a close look
at how each piece was drawn.

be easy to miss some of its powerful capabilities
and simple shortcuts. This article is the first in a
series that highlights some techniques that can
enable you to work more efficiently. For more tips
and tricks, see FreeHand 10 tips and tricks: Part 2.

Part 2
- Macromedia FreeHand 10 has many features so it may
be easy to miss some of its powerful capabilities
and simple shortcuts. This article is the second in
a series that highlights some techniques that can
enable you to work more efficiently. For more tips
and tricks, see FreeHand 10 tips and tricks: Part 1.
Freehand Tutorials - Drawing complex paths with the
Pen tool
- The Macromedia FreeHand Pen tool defines a path by
placing points. A path looks like a series of curves
and straight lines, so it can be easy to forget that
a path is actually a series of two or more connected
points. This article describes how to use the Pen
tool to draw complex paths.
Freehand Tutorials - Using Brush Strokes in FreeHand
10 to Create Intricate Patterns
- Brush strokes are patterned strokes based on an
object that you create from a graphic or text and
save in the Library panel as a symbol. By creating a
brush stroke from a symbol, you save drawing time,
eliminate excessive redraw time, and reduce file
size, which is ideal for graphics that will appear
on a Web page.

Freehand Tutorials - Using Connector Points in
Macromedia® FreeHand®
- Macromedia FreeHand and Fontographer are two
graphics applications that support connector points
(more
here
on point types in drawing programs). Although
connector points are not widely supported they can,
nevertheless, be very useful. This short tutorial
attempts to provide an example of how to use them to
your advantage.
Freehand Tutorials - Using a Blend For Irregular
Shapes in FreeHand®
- Gradient fills are often used to shade objects for
a realistic look. Using a gradient fill is limited
because the gradient steps don't always run in the
same direction as the shape of the object. Many
times you will encounter irregular shapes and you
would like to give them a gradient fill only to
achieve unsatisfactory results. This technique is
useful in these situations.
Freehand Tutorials - Applying a Gradient Across
Multiple Objects In FreeHand®
- When applying gradient fills to objects in
FreeHand, each object will have the full range of
the gradient applied to it. However, this may not be
the effect you want to create. Sometimes you may
want the gradient fill to be shared across multiple
objects. The way to do this is to apply the gradient
to a composite path. The example in this tutorial
uses FreeHand 9 on a text object that has been
converted to paths.

- This tutorial is for creating metallic gradients
with Macromedia® FreeHand. This tutorial uses
version 9, but the steps should be the same for any
version.

FreeHand Tutorials - Applying multiple strokes and
fills
- Macromedia FreeHand MX extends the possibilities
of creative and technical illustration by allowing
multiple strokes, fills, and special effects to be
combined in a single object. In this lesson you'll
learn to use the Object panel to add, edit,
rearrange, and remove strokes and fills from
objects.
Freehand Tutorials - Using vector and raster effects
- Macromedia FreeHand MX lets you add live vector
and raster effects to objects to expand the creative
possibilities of an illustration. In this lesson
you'll learn to use the Object panel to add,
rearrange, and remove effects from objects.
Freehand Tutorials - Seamless Junction
- Learn how to create a seamless junction from this
article represented by Steve Weintraub.
FreeHand Tutorials - Using the Extrude tool
- Macromedia FreeHand MX lets you add depth to
objects by extruding them. Extrusion adds depth to
an object by stretching it in three-dimensional (3D)
space. In this lesson, you'll learn how to extrude
an object using the Extrude tool, and you'll edit
the object by rotating it in 3D space. You'll also
use the Object panel to make changes to the profile
of an extruded object.

Using gradients
- Macromedia FreeHand MX gives you greater control
over gradients than ever before. Gradient handles
now let you easily adjust the direction, angle, and
proportions of many gradients. New gradient types
add to your creative possibilities. In this lesson,
you'll learn about the types of FreeHand gradients,
and you'll learn how to edit gradients using the

convert your FreeHand files to bitmapped file
format, you will have to export your file to
Photoshop. Sounds simple, but there are some
obstacles you better know how to overcome.
Freehand Tutorials - Designing With Imported Artwork
- If you completed FreeHand tutorial: Illustration
basics, which is the first tutorial of this two-part
series, you designed a product logo. In this
tutorial, you'll incorporate that artwork into a
larger document: a sales brochure. Although you're
not required to complete the previous tutorial
before beginning this tutorial, Macromedia
recommends that you work through the previous
tutorial for a more complete experience with the new
Macromedia FreeHand features and MX interface.

to assign Macromedia Flash actions to objects and to
export documents as Flash movies. In this lesson,
you'll use the Action tool and the Navigation panel
to create Flash actions. Then you'll test your movie
and export it for use in any Macromedia Flash
Player.

Freehand Tutorials - Using Symbols in FreeHand 10 to
Optimize Your Workflow
- Symbols are now more intuitive and easier to use
in Macromedia FreeHand 10. Although changing a
symbol has always changed all associated instances
automatically, you no longer need to release an
instance from its symbol, edit it, and then replace
